The First National Bank of Clarendon

Clarendon is the county seat of Donley County, about 60 miles southeast of Amarillo on TX 287, 30 miles beyond Claude.

The First National Bank of Clarendon was chartered 5463 on May 27, 1900.
It printed currency until the end of the National Bank period.
In 1956, it was absorbed by the Farmers State Bank of Clarendon.

Which in turn was consumed by Herring Bank.

Which explains, finally, the sign on the side of the bank building.

The First National Bank of Clarendon printed 1882 Brown Backs, Date Backs and Value Backs plus 1902 Plain Backs, and then 1929 Types 1 and 2.
The census records twenty-two notes: one 1882 Brown Back, one 1882 Value Back, six 1902 Plain Backs, twelve 1929 Type 1's, and two 1929 Type 2's.

This 1882 Value Back sold at a Heritage Auction, June 2010, for $4,887.
