[The Commercial and Financial Chronicle, Vol LXXII, P. 918]

The history begins in 1917 with the First State Bank of George West.

[The Texas Bankers Record, October, 1917]

This narrative provides more but incomplete detail:

"Mr. Charlie [Tullis] proved his trust-worthiness during his tenure as Sheriff and Tax Collector.  The pioneers in Live Oak County did not trust bankers, especially with their reputation for confiscating property and extracting forfeitures. Charlie's strong reputation for honesty, fairness, and integrity established him as a natural leader in the banking business ... He was President and instrumental in the founding of First State Bank of George West in 1917 when George West needed a banking institution.  His reputation brought security and encouraged others to invest. He served as President for most of his 38-year-long association with the bank.  Even when the bank was reorganized during the Depression [1934], Charlie was there to welcome the community when the doors opened once again as the First National Bank of [in] George West. He was a major stockholder, grew assets, and served without pay or compensation for most of his banking career. His name was First National's greatest asset, and he was respected throughout the county and south Texas for his abiding judicious respect for law, his knowledge of the banking business, and necessary connections with prominent people throughout south Texas. Under his leadership, the bank soon acquired the largest holdings within the county." [www.liveoakchc.com/texas-historic-markers/charles-and-emma-lewis-tullis/]

The bank apparently began in 1917, then morphed into the First National Bank of George West in 1926, and then into the First National Bank in George West [Charter 14012, which issued no currency] in 1934. And finally the SunTrust we see above:

"In 2013, First National Bank of George West, based in south Texas acquired the rights to the name SouthTrust Bank ... acquiring only the trademark rights to the name as an effort to distinguish their brand amongst other national banks" [wikivisually.com/wiki/SouthTrust]

There is no reason to believe the bank every occupied a location other than the one above at 601 Guadelupe.

The census reports fifteen notes: six 1902 Plain Backs and nine 1929 Type 1's. One Plain Back is in the Philpott-Moody Collection.

This 1902 Plain Back sold at auction in January, 2018 for $1,200:
