Rotan

The First National Bank of Rotan

Rotan is in Fisher County, 41 miles west from Abilene on IH 20 to Sweetwater, then 25 miles north on TX 70 (five miles past Roby).

The First National Bank of Rotan was chartered number 8693 and still exists.

This is the current First National Bank of Rotan building at the intersection of Garfield and Meade.

But it is not the original.

Four banks were chartered in Rotan in 1907.

The Rotan National Bank and the Farmers and Merchants National Bank were not issuers of currency. They and the Cowboy State Bank no longer exist and seem to have no trace.

The First National Bank of Rotan printed 1902 Red Seals, Date backs, and Plain Backs and then 1929 notes, Types 1 & 2.
There are eleven notes in the census: three 1902 Date Backs. five Plain Backs, and three 1929 Type 1's. All are $10 notes. One Plain Back is in the Philpott-Moody Collection.
This Plain Back note sold in June, 2010 for $891:
